Africa is often reviewed as an underdeveloped continent with most of the countries struggling with issues ranging from poverty to civil wars to ethnic conflicts and political instability.  However, some of the biggest African companies bring revenue amounting to billions of dollars to the continent.

10.Imperial Holdings – $8 Billion

Imperial Holdings Limited is involved in logistics, vehicle, and financial service businesses in South Africa and internationally. The company’s Logistics Africa, which is the largest privately-held logistic company in South Africa.  It is one of the hugest suppliers of consumer goods and pharmaceuticals to African and other markets.
The Logistics International division offers contract logistics, warehousing, inland waterway shipping and container port management, and contract manufacturing services of chemicals and other value-added services.
Imperial was started as a motor dealership in downtown Johannesburg in 1947 and has developed into a corporation of more than 47,000 people spread out across the country, Africa, Europe, the UK, USA, and Australia. It has a large rental division.

9.Vodacom Group – $9.2 Billion

With its headquarters in Midrand, South Africa, the Vodacom employs 7,300 people via five African corporations.  These businesses offer class voice, data, messaging, and segments, broadband and congregated services to over 40 million clients.  The Vodacom group has achieved pole position more often than any other South African mobile network making it one of African Biggest Companies.

8.Sanlam – $10.12 Billion

Sanlam is a financial services group with its headquarters in Cape Town.  It started as a life insurance company in 1918 and with time has diversified into the financial services business. It specializes in financial planning, trusts, retirement, wills, short-term insurance, asset management, risk management and capital market activities, investment and wealth.
The group provides services in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia,   Malawi, Swaziland, Zambia, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Mozambique, Malaysia, India and the UK.  The company also has business interests in the US, Australia, and the Philippines.
Sanlam is registered on both the Namibian and South African stock exchanges.

7.Shoprite Holdings – $10.14 Billion

Shoprite has stores in 17 countries in Africa including South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, and Mauritius.  The business is listed on three stock exchanges namely; South African, Zambian and Namibian. The group has total control over or input in more than 1,700 shops.  It has a bold vision for the future since its establishment in 1979. The Group has developed and acquired new business and uses expansion strategies making it the leading food retailer it is.
It owns 2653 outlets spread in 15 countries across Africa and on Indian Oceans islands and employs over 143 000 people.

6.Eskom – $13.7 Billion

It is the largest producer of power in Africa and one of the biggest in the world. It produces 95% of the power used in South Africa and 45%t of the continent’s energy requirements. It is also protected as an asset controlled by the South African government putting it into a lucrative position.  The company gives South Africa another slot in the top ten biggest companies in Africa.

5.The Bidvest Group – $16.5 BILLION

It is an international services company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Bidwest is operational in four continents and employs 105,000 people across the globe. With roots in South Africa, it deals in many areas from travel to food services.  4.MTN Group – $17.2 Billion

The MTN Group is the smaller of South Africa’s two mobile giants.  However, it has a larger international reach than its competitors. It is available in sixteen countries in Africa and several others in the Middle East. It was founded in 1994, and by mid-2011 the group had more than 147 million subscribers.   The huge number of customers put the firm among the most successful in the continent.

3.Sasol – $18.3 Billion

The company’s interests include coal, oil, gas, and others.  Sasol is an international integrated chemicals and energy company available in 38 countries.  The company leverages technologies and the expertise of 30,300 employees. It is the third of African biggest companies.  It was founded in 1950 in South Africa and is listed on the JSE in South Africa and on the New York Stock Exchange in the United States.

2.Sonangol – $22.2 Billion

Sonangol is an Angolan oil giant that explores and produces oil and gas on the subsoil and continental shelf of Angola.  The company was started operating in 1976.  It has other offices in Cape Verde, Brazil, the United States, Venezuela, Singapore, Hong Kong, Portugal, and the United Kingdom
Sonangol is a monopoly in the country.  It is Africa’s third-biggest oil producer. It has more than 30 subsidiaries.  These work with Sonangol to help it reach its needs in the railways, transport systems, telecommunications firms and refinery facilities located across the globe.

Algeria’s oil and gas giant Sonatrach is the first listed company in Africa. The company’s interests include exploration, production, pipeline, transportation, processing and marketing of hydrocarbons and their by-products.  Other areas include desalination of seawater and power generation.  It also invests in or owns 18 other companies.  The company works in several regions of the world, including Europe, Latin America, and the USA.
