Tuesday night, the former first lady addressed an audience of 8,500 people at the 30th Women’s Foundation of Colorado (WFCO) Anniversary event about her experiences in the White House.
She was being interviewed by WFCO President Lauren Casteel when the topic of glass ceilings came up, she wanted to know which metaphorical “shards” cut Michelle the deepest during her time in the White House.
“The shards that cut me the deepest were the ones that intended to cut,” responded Obama. “Knowing that after eight years of working really hard for this country, there are still people who won’t see me for what I am because of my skin color.”
So it’s not just on the streets, stores and workplaces; even one of the most powerful and respected women in the United States gets hit with bias. Although interestingly, she credits her sex with giving her the toughness to deal with the situation.
“Women, we endure those cuts in so many ways that we don’t even notice we’re cut,” she’d add. “We are living with small tiny cuts, and we are bleeding every single day. And we’re still getting up.”
Michelle addressed a few other topics as well: she repeated her claim that she’s not intending to run for public office (dammit), and that despite her remarks on racism, she still believes in the American people. “The people in this country are universally good and kind and honest and decent.”
She strayed away from any political talk, which was all the more notable considering Trump’s recent moves against Obamacare and allowing transgender people to serve in the military. Michelle, as always, decided to remain above it all.
